Gamifying the SDLC
Last year we delivered DevOps simulations in partnership with G2G3. We learnt a lot. I have been working in the SDLC business for 30 years, yet I learnt more about the human interactions involved in building software than any other equivalent period in my career.
Gamifying the SDLC is a new concept and we are offering the opportunity to engage in this unique form of education on May 16th at the Convention Center in Dublin. The cost is your own time – 7 hours. To apply for your place in the simulation email email@example.com
If you are mildly curious about DevOps and want to accelerate your learning, you will definitely be able to answer why DevOps. You will also form views on the feasibility of these new ways of working.
If you can answer ‘why DevOps’ and are moving onto the how DevOps question then simulation works well for a couple of reasons.
First off it impacts mindset. Observing what happens when hierarchy meets empowered people in a safe environment is a pre-cursor to new ways of working back at the office. Previously silo’d colleagues working together to create new roles provides teams with a trial run for what good looks like.
Secondly we look at best practice – an ever shifting blend of process and tools. DevOps is not one size fits all, but a customer specific blend of process, tools and how your organisation works today. So for example the pace and priority for test or release automation, should become clearer. Or the importance of customer value add as DevOps esperanto vs the multiple ‘dialects’ we often see as different departments attempt to collaborate.
Lastly you get first hand experience of the ‘softer’ DevOps concepts such fail fast, project vs product and continuous improvement. What can sometimes be dry subjects to discuss are more robustly engaged in a fast moving competitive and fun gaming experience.
We ran a simulation with PTSB recently and their Group CTO Tom Hayes had this to say
“Thanks for running the Simulation event before Christmas. I have only heard really positive feedback. Innovative training approach and excellent team building dimension.’‘.
